Company Description:
The Half Moon, Cuxham, Nr. Watlington:
There are, in our beautiful corner of, pubs in villages or hamlets that would enhance the look of any tourist guide. There are's an air of distant times about such places; thatched homesteads, farm buildings, farm vehicles and cattle being herded to new pastures. Mud and straw marking a path on modern tarmac. Into this scene weave the Half Moon at Cuxham; a village scene fit as a film setting for a Hardy novel.
Inside, amongst old beams, original red and black floor tiling and Edwardian tables and chairs, lies modernity in the guise of Eilidh Ferguson and Andrew Hill, the new landlords, whose warm welcome and super food have brought more than a sign of life back to this aged, idyllic spot. In fact, the place is positively reborn.
Andrews menu has caught today as foodie mood perfectly. The blackboard menu changes daily which makes life for the visitor, or regular, much more interesting. Chance by on the day they have home-made potted crab, please order it. Ill say no more. a crispy duck nut and combining it with his version of Caesar salad proved to be a quite exceptional dish. Ive also tried his Fish Pie and if you're with some friends ask for the mixed starter dish. It s not only beautiful to look at but truly delicious with lots of variety.
Typically, you should find dishes such as; Bouillabaisse or Roast Hake, Leek and Cheddar Quiche or Confit Pork Belly with sage mash, apples and onions. There always a good cross section of dishes and Andrew goes for quality not quantity and all their fresh produce comes from the vegetable garden when in season that bolts on to their large summer garden.
Puddings are, of course, all homemade and are priced at £4.95. A delightful cheese board is available on Friday & Saturday nights (priced at £6). The cheeses are placed upon slate and brought to your table for you to make your selections.
Review written by Peter Savage, October 2006 for Round and About Magazine.
